Digitised bibliography of Crum’s “List of Abbreviations”

Walter E. Crum’s A Coptic Dictionary (1939) remains the standard reference dictionary for Coptic. To compile it, Crum drew on the latest published editions of Coptic texts available in his day and consulted many unpublished collections held by institutions and in private hands. 1

Crum used a series of abbreviations to indicate the sources for his citations, which he listed, along with sigla for dialects, parts of speech, among others, in his List of Abbreviations (pp. xi-xiv).

Presented here is a reproduction of that list with links to digitised versions of the publications, monographs, series, and journals, from which he drew — a digital bibliography. This resource is intended to be a convenient way to quickly access the same editions that Crum himself consulted to see the full context of his citations. 2

Footnotes

  1. Some of the collections Crum consulted have since been catalogued, published, or digitised at least in part; many others have not though copies he made may be in the Griffith Institute Archive. I have not indicated these here at present but may do so in the future. ↩︎
  2. In many cases newer editions have since emerged but since this list is intended as an aid to Crum’s dictionary, newer edition and/or digitised manuscript have not generally been indicated. The vast majority of publications Crum cites are available online (some only via US access) with only a few not yet digitised. ↩︎
